The Green Team

The Green Team came together because they are passionate about sustainability and felt they could make a significant difference by implementing simple, lasting changes at Westerly Creek Elementary School.

Kermit’s Update: January 26, 2012

WCE is getting greener by the week! Our switch from plasticware to silverware is going smoothly. Students are learning how to bus their hot lunch trays by placing forks and spoons in water trays. Our next big push in working toward less waste in the lunchroom is composting and recycling milk and juice cartons. We are looking for parent volunteers to help us monitor this effort during the first weeks of this initiative’s implementation.

Compost monitors needed: If you are interested in helping us monitor composting and recycling in the lunchroom for a few lunch periods, please come to the Monitor Training on February 7, at 9:00 to 9:55 am in the Cafeteria to learn more. The weeks that we need support will be Wednesday thru Friday 2/22 – 2/24 and 2/27 – 3/2. For more information, please contact Marnie Cooke at marnie_moody@dpsk12.org or 720.424.3180.

Projects

Ongoing sustainability efforts include the Red Apple Recycling bin, for shoes and textiles to avoid landfills, and the book recycling bin. Both are located in the east parking lot.

Grants/Awards

We are applying for grants to help launch and support additional Green Team initiatives, like composting and improving school gardens.  We are currently seeking a community sustainability grant from Walmart and a school garden grant from Whole Foods.

WCE was awarded a Denver Recycles Grant in which the 5th grade classes are measuring school waste to determine other ways to minimize our school’s impact on the environment.

Kermit’s Korner

Kermit’s Korner is a new addition to the WCE Weekly Update. Look for it at the end of each month. It will give tips on how to make your homes more sustainable. We hope you will find them useful!
