STEAM Community Workshop Opportunity!

Josh Kumin is a STEM education outreach consultant working with Metropolitan State University of Denver. He and his team are collaborating with community groups in the NE area of Denver to create opportunities for students to explore STEM career pathways.

As a part of his grassroots initiative, they will be running a free STEM event at the Montbello Recreation Center, on Saturday, October 6, from 12:30-3:30pm. This event will bring together students, parents, teachers and organizations in an effort to inspire students and spark conversations around STEM careers.

At the event, PreK-12 grade students and parents will have the opportunity to walk around and participate in a variety of fun STEM activities! Families can look forward to:
  • Fun activities for kids of all ages
  • Prize drawing for a robot and other items!
  • Light refreshments
  • Parent/teacher workshops

From 1:30-3:00pm, they will be running workshops for parents and teachers.
Here’s a little info on both:

Parent workshop led by Deborah Sims-Fard

Join us for a unique opportunity to hear from young women about the impact they want to make in their communities and world and how race, gender, and class impact their decisions, voice, and choices. JF STEM Institute is dedicated to the advocacy, education, and equity of marginalized communities specifically African American girls and girls of color in North Denver.

Teacher workshop led by Toi Massey and Susan Baber

Join us for an opportunity to experience an innovative approach to how the STEM industry and educators can collaborate in support of inspiring students to choose STEM careers. Teachers will walk away with a variety of resources including how to find the right community experts/organizations for their short term or long term projects.

For both workshops, parents and teachers can pre-register by filling out this brief form online. Teachers will receive a certificate of participation for attending the workshop, led by Toi Massey, founder of the JEKL Foundation for STEAM Education, and Susan Baber, passionate teacher and advisory board member for Community Collaborative Schools. Teachers, especially those working in STEM fields, will walk away with many creative ideas and resources!
